Maverick Camp Endeavour Morocco 2023

5 - 10 October 2023 | TOUBKAL, MOROCCO

The Atlas Mountains are an amazing place to run, so we are thrilled to return in 2023 for our 6-day camp in Morocco.

Steeped in history and culture, Morocco offers a whole new experience, and we can’t wait to show you why we’re so excited to explore this with you.

The journey that we are taking, ventures into the mountains where North Africa’s highest peak, Jebel Toubkal, can be found. At 4167m into the heavens, the views are spectacular, which is more than a reward for your efforts in scaling it. This quasi-mythical mountain is the most eulogised peak in the country and it well-deserves the praise heaped upon it. In summer it is an adventure that most reasonably fit people can tackle in two or three days from Imlil.

The mountainous terrain offers a different experience to the more popular alpine destinations, as you wind your way through ancient Berber settlements, whilst soaking up the breathtaking views to Mt Toubkal. This will be an experience you will not forget.

You don't have to be a well-seasoned ultra runner for this camp. Just be comfortable running on trails and being out on your feet for the day. We will choose appropriate routes, and always give you options.

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE TO GO?

Camp Endeavour Morocco has been designed to challenge you therefore we do require you to have a competent level of fitness - this is for your enjoyment and the safety of others in the group. We want you to have a fantastic experience and in no way is this camp aimed at elite runners - it’s all about you. We want it to be fun - a trip that will leave you thinking about the mountains long after you return home.

TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION

We recommend you get the 6:40 am flight from Stanstead (STN) to Marrakech Airport (RAK), which will arrive at 10:15 am. This flight is provided by Ryanair.

We will meet at Marrakech airport at 11am on Thursday 5th October and transfer via arranged transport to Imlil, a 2hr drive. Regular direct flights leave the UK from major airports. London and Manchester are often the best options. We will return to Marrakech on the 9th October and spend the night in the city. We recommend you book flights on the 10th October in the afternoon to give you further time to spend in the city. There will be one transfer to the airport on the 10th October covered in the cost.  If you book early it is normal to find return flights for less than £150. All travel in-country is covered in the cost.

Accommodation will be in simple local hotels, mountain lodges and riads. This is all covered in the cost.

Please make sure you have your own travel insurance.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED

The journey that we are taking into the mountains means that it will be unpractical to bring a large amount of kit with us. There will be the possibility to leave luggage at the hotel in Imlil before we head into the mountains. There will be Mules available to carry some kit into the mountain refuges for us, but there is a limit to the amount of weight they can carry, so we must be mindful of not overpacking. The kit list below are the absolute essentials for when we are in the mountains.

• Sturdy running shoes, designed for road running with good lugs and grip.
• Socks. We recommend a fresh pair of socks per day. It is worth bringing a few warmer pairs for the days we go higher or if there is bad weather
• Leggings. It can get cold if the weather is bad and they are also nice to wear in the refuges in the evening.
• Running shorts
• Waterproof trousers. We know people are not used to running in waterproof trousers, but as we will be going a lot slower than normal these are an essential bit of kit!
• 2 x short sleeve base layer
• 2 x long sleeve base layer
• Warm Jumper/fleece layer
• Lightweight Down or synthetic jacket  layer
• Waterproof jacket
• Hat
• Buff
• Gloves. Thin liner gloves and a thicker warm pair
• Sunglasses
• Sunhat
• Leki or running poles are essential. Ideally lightweight ones. These will help massively for the long climbs. Please not that these can not go in your hand luggage as security will take them from you. They must be checked in as sports equipment or put in with your hold luggage.
• Water Bottles. The ability to carry 1.5ltrs
• Small running day pack. Big enough to carry waterproofs, warm layers, hat, gloves, water and food. Approx 10 - 15ltr
• Small kit bag for your spare clothes to go on the Mule.
• Small personal was kit
• Microfibre travel towel
• Small selection of personal snacks
• Crocs/hut slippers/spare trainers. It is nice to take your trainers off at the end of the day and have something comfortable and warm to put on your feet.
• Local currency, insurance documents, passport

NUTRITION

While we are out in the trails we recommend that you eat little and often, especially on our long run day. Approximately 200 calories an hour is generally recommended, but everyone is different, and it's always worth having too much food than too little. We recommended a mix of sweet and savoury snacks. Our guides will give you plenty of advice about running and race nutrition during the camp, as we have learned that this is a topic that people always have plenty of questions about.

HYDRATION

We have been using Precision Fuel & Hydration for years and we can’t recommend them enough. Will will have plenty of their products to try out over the course of the camp.
