By MTD Local Hero Paul Christian
Our Maverick Local Hero Paul Christian ( @run_p.r.c ) has written a review on our Buckinghamshire event. Paul is new to the team this year, but he has been a Maverick since the very beginning. He has an insatiable appetite for racing and pushing himself quite literally to tears. He is a resilient as he is bonkers (VERY), he never fails to bring the banter, he is the first to take the mick out of himself for his tears on the trails and of course he is always on-brand. Enjoy and we will see you all on the trails soon.

Maverick Race creates trail running perfection yet again, this time in Buckinghamshire!
The excitement leading up to a Maverick Race weekend is always palpable amongst Trail Runners and more so than ever last weekend, with the introduction of a brand-new event in Buckinghamshire. With one of the most exciting trail running event calendars in the UK, Maverick Race has a special talent for picking exceptionally beautiful venues that provide unforgettable trails. Their events never fail to impress. The Maverick Inov-8 Original Buckinghamshire event was no exception and enhances the phenomenal reputation of Maverick Race. Believe the hype because the hype is real.
The venue in Princes Risborough was easily accessible and perfectly located on the edge of the beautiful Chiltern Hills. Excellent free parking, just a short walk from the Maverick village, ensured that you arrived stress free and relaxed, ready to enjoy the pre-race atmosphere. Registration was so quick and easy, with friendly volunteers and the event village was epic. Trail Mix provided tea, coffee and a huge selection of amazing cakes (the Dorset apple cake is incredible). Suunto gave you the chance to trial the awesome Baro 9 watch. Chulli Pizza cooked up delicious oven fired pizzas and Inov-8 were there giving you the chance to race in the G-Grip 275 Roclite (I tried a pair and give them 10 out of 10). The Maverick store and Alton Sports also provided a wide range of kit to spend your pocket money on. Very rarely are running event villages this good.
Pre Race catch up… Actually thinking about whether I’ve put enough vaseline on…
Maverick clearly go to a huge effort to create a special atmosphere and it was never better than last weekend, with so many incredible people from all over the country catching up and meeting each other for the first time. It’s a unique aspect of a Maverick event that I’ve never really seen anywhere else and which gives these events a special identity. The excited and happy buzz of likeminded people about to race along stunning trails together. All the Maverick team make you feel so welcome at these events and the sense of community is genuine and strong.
Steps of torture. Number 2167 clearly has his eyes on me…
s with all Maverick routes, the Buckinghamshire course literally had it all. A steep climb up Whiteleaf Hill leading to incredible views over the Chiltern Hills, technical trails, fast descents, stunning trails through ancient woodland, rolling hills through beautiful tracks of countryside and sections along the Prehistoric pathways of the Icknield Way. The 22km long route was a great mix of challenging technical sections and easier segments that allowed you to get some speed up and enjoy the surroundings. Yet again the feed stations were exceptional and the amazing marshals friendly and encouraging. For me trail running is a great way to get out into the countryside, explore, connect with nature and relieve stress. The Buckinghamshire event certainly achieved that and should be judged by the huge smiles on every single face. Looking through the exceptional race photos, taken by the hugely talented Jake Baggaley, it’s obvious that Buckinghamshire was an awesome race and that we all had a lot of fun! I’m looking forward to next year and getting the chance to get my own back on the climb up Whiteleaf Hill.
Running in these locations, with this company is like no other race series out there, TRUST ME, I race a lot!
Next race in the Maverick Race calendar is Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire on 6th April. I cannot wait. In fact I’m so overwhelmed with excitement and the Maverick love I may shed a tear…
… to be continued.
