Run Leaders for the Maverick Run Project are the people who make our social runs possible. They know their local area better than we do so they go out and find routes that they think you'll enjoy. Below is the information about the Run Leader for this particular social run.
I’m a trail runner from Bristol that started from nothing being an ex-footballer with a history of 8 knee build operations to my name. Now I easily take on 50-mile races in my stride.
I found running after my dad died which pushed me to focus on my mental and physical help which help me to survive the grief I was experiencing.
Running for me is about the community which I found within Maverick and with the running community. This saved me and I can’t thank the friends and family I have made during the time I have been running. So Maverick Run Project means to me that we stand for equality, empowerment and community within running.
No matter who we are, we are a group of people who may have never met each other before who connect over our love of getting out and testing ourselves through trail running with the support of the crew behind you.
The most important thing for me is that we start together and end together - no one is ever left behind. For me, the three key factors for me are Empowerment -equality - community No Egos. No show-offs. Just good times and good vibes
Jay hosts three runs within the Bristol area - Ashton Court, Leigh Woods and Blaise Castle - with alternating routes. To get the most up to date information, locations and dates, please sign into the My Running Club app.
Leigh Woods, Forestry England, Abbots Leigh, Bristol, BS8 3QE
Route 1 - Paradise Bottom and Back - Distance: 6.4km
Route 2 - Paradise bottom - Nightingale Valley - Distance: 9km
Route 3 - Nightingale Valley - Distance: 7.7km
Leigh Woods is a popular woods for mountain bikers, trail runners and walkers. It is located on the outskirts of Bristol, just a stone's throw away from the Clifton suspension bridge. There are beautiful, undulating trail paths weaving through the ancient broadleaf forest and limestone grassland along the Avon Gorge, with spectacular views.
The woods are accessed via the medium-sized car park- the ideal place for starting off on a walk or a run. There are also a number of picnic tables throughout the woodland for rest breaks.
We will take an adventure into the woods, taking in magical spots like Paradise Bottom. There are some spectacular hills - such as Nightingale Valley, as well as some easy miles along the towpath taking in the views of Clifton suspension bridge.
Blaise Castle, Kings Weston Road, Bristol, BS10 7QS
On a hill above the gorge is a sham castle in Gothic Revival style overlooking Bristol, Avonmouth and the Avon Gorge, with views across to South Wales on a clear day.
We will start with a loop of Blaize Castle estate, taking on some of its short sharp hills, heading towards the beautiful views at the very top of the estate. This is a mixed-terrain route - we will be running through woodlands, fields and shared paths.
It’s a beautiful route that will keep you on your toes with the changing terrain and spectacular views.
Ashton Court Mansion Car Park, Kennel Lodge Road, Bristol, BS3 2JT
The Ashton court to Dundry Hilltop run offers a serene escape from the city. There are rolling hills, beautiful country lanes and breathtaking scenery through mixed terrain. We will meet in the Ashton Court estate main car park (please note that parking charges apply).
We will follow winding paths up into the woods and straight onto the golf course. In winter this is a muddy, hilly route from the start, but the amazing views once we reach the top and the downhill on the way back is worth the slog at the start.
Once we hit the top of Dundry Hill, we can take a rest break and get a few snaps of the epic views of the city of Bristol, the Somerset Hills, the Chew Valley and the Mendip Hills.
