ABOUT YOUR RUN LEADER

Run Leaders for the Maverick Run Project are the people who make our social runs possible. They know their local area better than we do so they go out and find routes that they think you'll enjoy. Below is the information about the Run Leader for this particular social run.

Helen Foulds

Hello guys.  I’m Helen, an enthusiastic (if not too speedy) trail runner from the Surrey Sussex Hampshire borders.  I like to run a variety of local trails and terrains and have been fortunate to meet a lot of lovely people in the trail community who will help me plan and navigate a variety of runs for the Mavericks.  Expect there to be mud, hills (I will moan about these) but beautiful views and a fair amount of wildlife en route.  I hope to offer a couple of evening runs a month and one longer weekend one.

Away from running, I am mum to 4 small kids and usually (in non-COVID times) work in London for a Canadian bank.

RUN INFORMATION

Helen organises several different routes which will alternate each week. The shorter runs take place during the week, while the longer runs take place at the weekend. Read below to find out more about each route.

Devils Punchbowl intro to trails - 5km

Distance: 5km
Address: Devils Punchbowl car park, GU26 6AG (National Trust, charges apply or park on the road)
What3words: certainty.spectacle.paper

Come try the trails!  A run/walk ramble session for those who want to try trail running.  Although known for its hill/punched bowl (said to have been created when the Devil was angry with Thor) this route around the Devils Punchbowl is not particularly hilly and allows runners to enjoy the heathland of the National Trust lands.  The route has been designed to provide a good introduction to trail running with friends.  This session is aimed at anyone wanting to try trail running and I expect there will be plenty of stops / walking breaks to give everyone a chance to enjoy the route. Meet at 7pm.

Witley Common intro to trails - 6km

Distance: 6km
Parking: Lea Coach Road car park, GU8 5PZ
What3words: throwaway.mystery.bound

Come try the trails!  A run/walk ramble session for those who want to try trail running.  Witley Common is a beautiful National Trust common with varied but beautiful terrain.  It is not particularly hilly so is a great location to try trail running with friends.  This session is aimed at anyone wanting to try trail running and I expect there will be plenty of stops / walking breaks to give everyone a chance to enjoy the route.  Meet at 7pm.

Bramshott Common (Cold Ash hill loop) - 8.7km

Distance: 8.7km
Address: Bramshott Common Car park, Hindhead, Surrey, GU271QD

Meeting at the small car park just before joining the A3 this route takes you around Bramshott Common, down to Cold Ash hill, over railway crossings and towards Liphook before looping back into the top end of Bramshott and back.  Undulating and likely to be muddy in places but with varied terrain and plenty of wildlife to disturb.  A good route to try trail running with new friends.  We will aim to go at the pace of the slowest runner and run at a social pace so don’t feel afraid to come and join in.

Frensham Little Pond (car park on Grange Rd is start point) - 8.7km

Distance: 8.7km
Address: Frensham Little Pond Car Park, Grange Road, Frensham, Farnham, GU10 3BT

Meeting at the small car park/ layby on Grange Road just before the main National Trust car park we will enjoy the wide sandy trails that Frensham Little Pond has to offer, climbing up onto the ridge between the two ponds and exploring the area between Frensham and the Devils Jumps.  This route has the option to shorten if you wished to come and try a trail-run and wanted a 5km option instead.  Currently, the ground is hard-packed and mostly dry but it can get boggy with extensive rain so come prepared.

Bramshott / Waggoners Wells loop - 8.7km

Distance: 8.7km
Address: Bramshott Common Car park, Hindhead, Surrey, GU271QD

Meeting at the small car park just before joining the A3 this route takes you away from Bramshott down to Waggoners Wells where we can explore the lakes and the root-filled trails.  Climbing out of Waggoners be prepared to get muddy as the trails are extremely boggy but at the top of the hill, you are rewarded with the wide-open vistas of Bramshott Common.  We will loop around the common under the A3 and return back to the car park.  This route is hillier but if needed we can power hike up the boggy hills or regroup at the tops.

Waggoners Wells - 9km

Distance: 9km
Address: Knockhundred lane car park (just before joining A3) – GU26 6DE
What3words: hers.fields.palettes

A 9km loop taking in the glorious lakes of Waggoners Wells before climbing up onto Bramshott Common, briefly visiting the Canadian War memorial before crossing under the A3 and returning through woodland to the car park.  Varied terrain, with some sections covered in roots and/or thick mud (depending on timing) so trail shoes or tolerance of mud is required.  All welcome, we can regroup after the hills if a break is required.

Thursley Nature Reserve car park (next to cricket ground) - 10km

Distance: 10km
Address: Thursley Public Car Park (next to Thursley Cricket Club), Dyehouse Road, Thursley, Surrey, GU8 6QD

Set in a National nature reserve in deepest darkest Surrey this route is a great intro for trail runners.  Not too hilly, but with long sweeping sandy trails through trees and around the wetland reserve.  Sadly the boardwalks were destroyed by fire in 2020 but there are still some opportunities to get your feet muddy or wet if you choose.  There is very limited light pollution, so bring a head torch and be prepared to have a good laugh as we work our way around the reserve.

Meeting place is the car park next to the play area and cricket club.

Northchapel - 10km

Distance: 10km
Address: Park anywhere along Pipers Lane opposite playground, GU28 9JA
What3words: thrilled.grapevine.yield

Nestled just into West Sussex is the lovely village of Northchapel.  We meet opposite the playing field and run a variety of local trails in Frith Wood and surrounding villages.  There are a couple of road crossings to be mindful of but the route has lovely views of the North downs and surrounding countryside without being too technical.  Everyone welcome!

Frensham to Waverley Abbey, back via Hankley - 14km

Distance: 14km
Address: Frensham Little Pond Car Park, Grange Road, Frensham, Farnham, GU10 3BT

Meeting at the small car park/ layby on Grange Road just before the main National Trust car park we will leave the Little Pond and travel along undulating trails passing a local farm (usually stopping to admire the piglets) crossing streams and travelling beside the river Wey until we get to Tilford.  We then climb out of Tilford and over towards Farnham to visit Waverley Abbey (a National Heritage site) where there will be a little time to explore the ruins / have a fuel stop before heading back and crossing over to Hankley Common and Frensham before returning to the start.  This will be run at a social pace so come with snacks and prepare to enjoy the Surrey countryside!  If you want to run in some of the streams you may want spare socks…

Forest Mere - 14.5km

Distance: 14.5km
Address: The Deers Hut, Longmoor Road, Griggs Green, GU30 7PD

Nice romp over the ranges and taking in a trig on the way back. This scenic route takes in Forest Mere, Liss Forest and parts of Woolmer Ranges. Comfortable trails, with a mixture of gravel, sand and the occasional bog with good views of the North Downs before tracking back to the starting point.
