David Poole

Waterlooville & Fareham, Hampshire

Run Leaders for the Maverick Run Project are the people who make our social runs possible. They know their local area better than we do so they go out and find routes that they think you'll enjoy. Below is the information about the Run Leader for this particular social run

David Poole

Ginger Dave, or GD, is a UK Athletics Leader in Running Fitness, and an all-round top guy!

I am a chartered civil engineer working for a large UK infrastructure company. Married to Fran and dad to two amazing girls, and one border terrier

I love all things running, especially trail and ultra. I have been lucky enough to run in Canada, Hong Kong, France, Italy and Switzerland - as well as all around the UK

When not running (or working) I am usually doing something else active - typically long family dog walks, cycling and paddleboarding

I have a weakness for beer and pizza, and trail running has been an enabler to this.

Favourite trail snack... nut butter filled Clif bars... they are the nuts...also GU gel - Roctane Cold Brew Coffee (Zing!!!!!!)

In 2020 I ran my first 100 miler - self-supported as races were cancelled - 2021 let's see what happens but a few more 100s look to be on the cards

Below you'll find some information about some of the runs David organises. To get the most up to date information, locations and dates, please sign into the My Running Club app.

Queen Elizabeth Country Park Routes

Located just off the A3, three miles south of Petersfield in Hampshire and lying within the South Downs National Park, Queen Elizabeth Country Park offers some of the best woodland trails in the area. The park contains 1,400 acres (6 km²) of open access woodland and downland within the East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Be warned, it's hilly, but the stunning mix of trails will be sure to make even the toughest climb worthwhile. Both the midweek and weekend routes pack a bit of punch into relatively short distances. So, whether you are an experienced trail runner or just starting out, these routes will challenge, excite and reward you. Whilst you may have to slow to a power hike up some of the hills you will have more time to take in the surrounding scenery.

The midweek route takes us on a combination of tree-lined single track, wide well-trodden paths, and reveals a few hidden gems of lesser-known trails all within the park. The longer weekend route will add to this by taking us a little further afield, as we explore Head Down and some of the trails around Chalton – giving great views over the south coast and Solent.

Weekday Short Run - Distance: 8km, Elevation Gain: 240m
Weekend Long Run - Distance: 16km, Elevation Gain: 480m
Location: Juniper Car Park, Queen Elizabeth Country Park Gravel Hill, Waterlooville PO8 0QE

100 Acres Routes

Located just north of Fareham off the A32, 100 Acres offers some great forest trails for mavericks of all abilities and experience.

This historic woodland has several well-trodden and well-marked wide rolling trails and also has a network of some lesser-known single-track trails. You will get to explore all these during the midweek and weekend runs.

The midweek run will see us centred around the West Walk area on woodland trails. The weekend route will add a little out and back along the old route of The Watercress Line through the Meon Valley.

Weekday Short Run - Distance: 9km, Elevation Gain: 167m
Weekend Long Run - Distance: 17km, Elevation Gain: 300m
Location: Forest of Bere - Woodend Car Park, Heath Road, Fareham, PO17 6AY

Rowlands Castle

Located to the east of Rowlands Castle, Stansted Park stands within c1200 acres of ancient woodland and for hundreds of years, sweet chestnut has been traditionally coppiced here. Across the forest, a patchwork of different ages of coppice creates a subtly changing landscape.  You can see wood anemone, wild primroses and foxgloves. Butterflies and other insects thrive here, as do deer and a plethora of birdlife.

The 8km midweek route takes in a mixture of trail types; all are extremely user friendly and suitable for runners of all abilities. There is even a pub at the finish if you fancy a lemonade to refresh you!

Weekday Short Run - Distance: 8km, Elevation Gain: 96m
Location: Rowlands Castle - 1 Finchdean Road, Rowland's Castle PO9 6DA
