3rd June 2017
We welcome you to a whole new series; the Maverick X Series events are designed to test your resolve and take you to the upper limits of your abilities. We venture to The Snowdonia National Park known as Eryri in Welsh, a name that can be translated as “the place of the eagles”.
The park which covers 838 square miles is one of three national parks found in Wales, and the oldest - being designated in 1951. The area of the Snowdonia National Park has so much to offer the trail runner that if you are visiting for the first time you will wonder why it took you so long.
The marathon route will summit Mt Snowdon. If the weather is on our side you will be in awe of the stunning views that the magnificent Snowdonia Park has to offer. Head down the Watkins path and run along side Nant Gwynant river towards Beddgelert.
You will also pass Llyn Dinas. This lake derives its name from the nearby hillfort of Dinas Emrys, the remains of medieval and Dark Age fortifications. The fort provided shelter for the British king Vortigern, who escaped into Wales from the invading Anglo-Saxons. After the demise of Vortigern, the fort became the property of Aurelius Ambrosius, known as Emrys Wledig or the Emperor, from which the present name of the fort derives.
Legend has it that the lake was the site of a battle between Owein, one of Arthur's greatest warriors, and a giant. According to legend, Vortigern is said to have hidden the throne of Britain beneath a great stone by Llyn Dinas.
After soaking up the stunning scenery along the lakes you will head into Beddgelert Forest where the landscape is breathtaking and unique. Upon leaving the forest you will pass Llyn Cwellyn another one of Snowdonia's reservoirs, The lake is very deep and is one of the few lakes in Wales to support a natural population of Arctic char. The lake is also home to brown trout and there are otters that are regularly seen at the Castell Cidwm end. The route takes you back to the rangers path and back onto familiar rocky terrain for the final stretch back to the venue.
As with all of our events, there are 3 routes to choose from, which will be marked and marshalled at all the relevant points. We will issue cut off times and locations in our pre-event info so please keep your eyes peeled, this will come via email and updates on the website.
We recommend that you study the route pre-event and also make sure that you are confident in your abilities to take on these routes.
