What I do

I work in sports marketing and for Like the Wind running magazine.
I also write a blog - beardedrunner.com and occasional freelance copy.

Preferred Distance

Half Marathon for both road and trail! Short enough to be able to push hard, but long enough to take in your surroundings and have an awesome time in the process.

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

My favourite race of 2016 was the Moins Hard Trail Marathon in the French Alps. It was my first taste of racing in the high mountains and I loved it!

PLANS FOR 2017

I am focussing the first couple of months of the year on training for London Marathon and getting a championship time. Then I can turn my attention back to trails!
I have a wedding in New York in May and am planning to run the Bear State 50k race at the same time. Then I run the Mont Blanc Marathon. Hopefully I get a place at OCC too all being well.
Finally I am super excited to run the marathon distances in Snowdonia and the Peak District, as well as some long Maverick Races closer to home in London.

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

Being super disorganised (and usually ill-equipped for the outdoors) I always try to remember some snazzy socks and headwear. Stance and Ciele are trail-chic in this regard! But actually both are super high quality, so not all fashion over function - I ran for 7 hours in the mountains in my Stance Crew socks without a blister!

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

I actually trained as a primary school teacher, but after four years in the classroom I left to join the BBC.  I originally joined an events team and then moved to BBC Comedy to work as a Production Coordinator a couple of years ago.

PREFERRED DISTANCE

I think my favourite distance is probably a half marathon as it’s still long distance, but can also be raced. Saying that, my favourite events of 2016 were Endure 24 (8k laps which we did in a team of 5), and Race to the Stones 100k. More than anything, it’s the trails and routes I love which ultimately affects what events and distances I sign up for.

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

This is between Race to the Stones 100k, Endure 24 and Maverick Somerset…. RTTS was a huge challenge I’d set myself and signed up before having even done a marathon. The route along the ridgeway was beautiful, and to finish far quicker than I could’ve expected was the icing on the cake.

PLANS FOR 2017

I absolutely love trails and exploring new places, so for 2017 I would love to take part in the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc’s OCC. Dependent on getting a place through the ballot, I’d tailor other races around supporting my training for that. My parents are also moving to Devon in Spring and so I’m also looking at running a local marathon, the North Dorset Village Marathon, which falls on their last weekend there as a fond au revoir to my childhood home.

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

I really don’t get on with shorts so tend to run in capris/crop tights, and having recently discovered skorts will run in those in the summer. I also LOVE a visor – obviously for looking super cool, but secretly it keeps the sweat out my eyes!

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

During the week I work as a High School Maths Teacher, teaching students from ages of 11-18. I also manage to sneak in some extra training too at lunch, by helping out with the School Cross Country Team.

PREFERRED DISTANCE

That's a tough one. I managed to complete my first trail marathon and then backed it up with a 50km trail race a month later. Since then I have enjoyed knocking my half marathon times down, plus they are possibly what I want to focus on for next year. I can see me pushing the distances further in the future, but I only do marathons in "even" years (2012/014/2016 to date)

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

On the road, Paris Marathon to break 4 hour barrier with my wife (3:52). On trail, Hampshire Hoppit's inaugural trail marathon (great half/full marathon event for people to look into for next year)!

PLANS FOR 2017

Loving the trails, so excited to be given the opportunity to be an ambassador for Maverick Races and seeing some of the amazing landscapes that we have to offer here in the UK. I'm also planning to see if I can have another shot at half marathon PB on road.

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

My Salomon S Lab Race Vest for long trail runs to carry hydration and a picnic. Salomon trail shoes, compressport calf guards and have hats/visors for all occasions.

'I enjoy all sorts of running environments, but especially love exploring the outdoors...'

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

I am currently working as a Researcher at a University- investigating exercise in extreme environments, including high altitude, cold water and hot environments, and how these can be used to improve exercise performance. I enjoy all sorts of running events, but especially love exploring the outdoors, and trail running is such a great way to do that. My interest in exploring via exercise led me to complete my PhD in Sports Science.

PREFERRED DISTANCE

I enjoy running lots of different distances and usually race between 10 k and half-marathon distance. I have also done a bit of road racing as well trail running and cross-country.

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

The best run of 2016 has got to be the Original Maverick 10 mile event in Dorset. I loved it because we got to run around one of my favourite places - Purbeck, close to where I grew up, and there was a great mix of forest, hills and coastal views. Plus I won some awesome prizes from the Maverick series sponsors too!

PLANS FOR 2017

I have a few things planned for 2017. Following some cross country at the beginning of the year I will to focus on a mixture of obstacle course races and trail runs.

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

My favourite kit for these events has got to be my Asics shoes- I have some bright pink ones for running on the road and some crazy colourful ones for trail runs. I get pretty hot when I'm running so you can usually find me running in a vest and shorts, whatever the weather. Hope to see you on the trails!

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

I am a Management Consultant, assisting companies to solve their business and technology issues, and to improve their business performance. Recent work has focussed on collaboration and emerging technologies. Some of the new startups in Silicon Valley are coming up with some amazing stuff…

PREFERRED DISTANCE

Having done nine Maverick events this year my preferred distance at the start was typically the 15km middle distance races. But that has changed at the back end of the year as I moved up to the longer 25km races, with these now becoming the ‘norm’…

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

That is a tough one, there have been a number of great races that Maverick have done in 2016, but up there are Dorset, Herdfordshire, Devon, and the last one at Stonor Park was a great location and course with a real autumnal feel to it.
My favourite race though has to be Somerset, getting up onto the Quantock hills with the views and tough hills was immense. It’s a great location where you can be truly disconnected from everything and route have a bit of eveything.

PLANS FOR 2017

To move up to matharon distances. The plan is to do one or two of the Maverick ones i.e.  Dorset, and Snowdonia is a ‘must do’, the photos just look amazing.… Also want to do a Cornwall cliff path race at some point.

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

Preferred gear, for shoes it is Inov-8. For the summer my ‘go to’ shoe has been the Trail Talon 275 but with winter coming it will be back to the Terraclaw 250 and X-Talon 212. Also for caps it has to be Ciele. They are brill, so comfortable you hardly notice you are wearing it.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

Currently working in retail as a store manager for Abercrombie and Fitch. It is a full on and fast paced but a thoroughly enjoyable job. However I hold a postgraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology and am in the process of setting up my own business in this extraordinary field.

PREFERRED DISTANCE

I love a good half marathon as you can get completely stuck in to a great running rhythm but you can have it done in a couple of hours and still be back in time for morning coffee. However having made my marathon debut this year and put in a 3:32:33 without too much drama I have completely caught the distance bug and can see myself quickly converting to longer distances.

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

My favourite run was making my marathon debut at London in April was fantastic and such an achievement due to having to defer by 2015 place and coming back from months of injury. But my favourite race was The Maverick original Herefordshire. It was such a special event where my love of running and the outdoors all came together with great running form. I met some amazing people that day and think it will turn out to be a defining day in my running life.

PLANS FOR 2017

Be a Maverick. So excited to go further with the Maverick marathon distances and go more extreme with the Maverick  BuffX series. More time in the great outdoors, more adventures in the most stunning national parks and more challenges. I also have a good for age London marathon entry so will be working hard to put in a solid time of around the 3:15:00 mark.

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

I am obsessed with Buffs in the colder months and have been known to wear up to three at one time (as a neck warmer, ear warmer and a hair band), I feel very naked if I don't have at least one with me. I'm not one for lots of tech as the pure freedom of running is best enjoyed in its natural form. However my Garmin edge 25 is my favourite running toy. It is so small and light it doesn't bother me on a run. It records just the right amount of data for me to see my running progress, without being at risk of getting caught up in too many numbers.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

I'm an Electrician.

PREFERRED DISTANCE

My favourite race distance is a trail half marathon. Short enough to push the pace and over an exciting changing terrain.

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

Best run of 2016 has to of been the OCC Race - forming part of the UTMB it's a 56km Ultra Marathon around Mont Blanc starting in Switzerland finishing in France.

PLANS FOR 2017

The OCC planted the seed for a hopeful return to race the bigger brother - The CCC Race which is twice the distance at just over 100kms. Training will involve a lot of miles in some great places (any excuse!) Including some 'training races' including the 'Montagnhard' and many weekends in Chamonix  (again, any excuse!)

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

Currently loving : Inov8 Trail shoes and race vests. Stance Socks. Always a trucker hat!

'I've had the same Mizuno trail shoes since 2009!'

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

I have a background in refugee issues, criminal and transitional justice - but I am taking some time out to do my PhD in law and art right now.

PREFERRED DISTANCE

For me, you can't beat a half marathon. It's the first competitive distance I ran and has stayed my favourite.

FAVOURITE RACE FOR 2016

Normally I would pick a race, but for 2016 I'd choose the amazing South Downs way - we ran from Eastbourne and it was the first time I had seen the white cliffs! The fish and chips at the end was pretty incredible too ;)

PLANS FOR 2017

A couple of things on the go: I've entered a 30km in the Carpathian mountains in Romania, which I have always wanted to visit. I'm also busy planning a route for running the West Highlands way with a friend in the Spring - and I've bought a wetsuit to face the English waters with! I've swum a few times at the Docks in London and I'd love to enter some swimming races up in the Lakes next year...and of course, I can't wait to hammer round the Mavericks courses with my dog, Red!

FAVOURITE RUNNING KIT

As winter sets in I am loving Asics: their lite-show jacket is light and warm (not waterproof though), and the motiontherm longs kept me warm and dry during some torrential lake district rain in October! I have had the same First Ascent ear warmers since 2006 and i think they are my most prized running possession :) I've also had the same Mizuno trail shoes since 2009 (I know, I just can't find anything as good as), and I'm trying to get into barefoot running by mixing it up with some really light innov-8s during the week.
